What You Need
- 100% cotton worsted (#4) yarn — cotton absorbs drips and handles hot mugs
- 4.0 mm (G-6) hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
Abbreviations (US terms): MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, inc = 2 sc in the same stitch, dec = single crochet two together (invisible decrease recommended), BLO = back loop only. The number in brackets is the stitch count at the end of the round.
The Golden Rule of Flat Circles
Add the same number of stitches in every round. In double crochet, that number is 12. If your circle ruffles, you’re adding too many; if it cups into a bowl, you’re adding too few.

Free Pattern: Round Cotton Coaster (about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm)
The ch 3 at the start of each round counts as the first dc. Join each round with a sl st to the top of the ch 3.
Round 1: MR, ch 3, 11 dc in the ring. Pull tight and join. (12)
Round 2: ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24)
Round 3: ch 3, 2 dc in the next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st* around. Join. (36)
Round 4: ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st* around. Join. (48)
Round 5: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join, fasten off and weave in. (48)
Block It Flat
- Spray the coaster lightly with water.
- Pin it on a towel or foam mat, gently stretching it into a circle.
- Let it dry completely — it will stay flat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my coaster wavy?
Check your stitch count — you probably added extra stitches. Blocking also helps a lot.
Can I use acrylic?
It works, but acrylic repels water, so mugs can slide. Cotton is best.
