What You Need
- Worsted weight (#4) soft acrylic or wool-blend yarn: about 400 yd / 365 m for the long loop, 200 yd / 183 m for the cowl
- 6 mm (J-10) crochet hook – one size bigger than the yarn label suggests, for a soft, drapey fabric
- Tapestry needle and scissors
- Optional: two stitch markers to hold the ends together when you join
Abbreviations (US terms): ch = chain, hdc = half double crochet, st(s) = stitch(es). Using UK patterns too? Check our US vs UK crochet terms chart.
The Easiest Crochet Stitch for a Scarf
The easiest crochet stitch for a scarf is the half double crochet (hdc). It is taller than single crochet, so the scarf grows twice as fast, but it is still dense enough to keep the wind out. If you have never made it, our step-by-step half double crochet tutorial shows every yarn-over.
Working with a slightly bigger hook (6 mm instead of 5 mm) is the secret to a scarf that drapes softly around the neck instead of standing stiff like a collar.

Gauge: 11 hdc and 8 rows = 4 in / 10 cm. Gauge is not critical for a scarf, but it helps you predict the yarn amount.
Foundation: Ch 27.
Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (25 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), turn. Hdc in each st across. (25)
Rows 3 and onward: Repeat Row 2 until the scarf measures 56–60 in / 142–152 cm for a long loop (about 112–120 rows), or 26–28 in / 66–71 cm for a short cowl (about 52–56 rows). Do not fasten off yet.
Tip: count your stitches every 10 rows. If you have 24 or 26, you have missed or added a stitch at the edge – the last stitch of each row hides right under the turning chain.

Join It: Classic Loop or Twisted Infinity Scarf
- Classic loop: lay the scarf flat, bring the two short ends together without twisting, and slip stitch through both layers across all 25 stitches.
- Twisted infinity scarf: give one end a half twist before you join. The twist makes the scarf sit beautifully when doubled around the neck.
- Fasten off, then weave in all ends along the seam so they disappear.
Wrap the long loop twice around your neck, or wear the cowl single for a neat, cosy look.
